What is a Roadshow?

The Quebec Family History Society participates in a number of genealogical fairs and meetings throughout the year, as a way to increase our exposure among genealogists and genealogists-to- be. These events, usually sponsored by various genealogical and family history societies, are based on a specific theme related to the study of family histories.

Genealogical seminars and fairs provide excellent opportunities to hear knowledgeable speakers discuss topics of interest. Those attending are interested in the same thing you are interested in so one often gets good suggestions that help advance your research. Between the lectures, there is an opportunity to meet other genealogists and to share interests, ideas, and research hints.

Because there are other associations represented, it provides an excellent opportunity to stock up on genealogical material such as books, charts, maps, etc. You can peruse the material before you buy, something not usually possible when you order by mail. During the lectures, the exhibitors can visit other exhibitors without braving the rush that happens between speakers.

If you are volunteering at a roadshow you would be:

- transporting books and other volunteers to the show
- setting up the display
- meeting people and talking about the QFHS and genealogy in general
- selling publications and taking orders to be filled later

Those attending these events are generally very nice, agreeable people who are interested in the same things you are. Some may become life-long friends and some may be able to help you with your research.

Genealogy is very much a hobby that thrives on mutual assistance, especially among researchers in different cities and going on a Roadshow is an excellent way to meet other researchers.

Each Roadshow is generally a one day event although some cover more than one day. We try to avoid asking people to stay overnight.
