You will learn simple and easy ways to create a classic-style album, how to journal a person's life story, how to use words to enhance the very few photos from years past and ideas on Heritage-style enhancements on an album page. During this hands-on seminar, you will create a page with your own photos. Albums, tools and accessories can be purchased from instructor at end of seminar. Family Tree Maker Course - Advanced

For this session, attendees should either have taken the Basic Family Tree Maker Course, or be at ease using all basic features of the software. The course will include creating family books and scrapbooks, adding pictures, file manipulation - joining, merging, etc, incorporating files downloaded from the Family Search (Mormon) Web site, an overview of creating your own Web site with FTW and more ... We will be using Version 11.0 but many of the features are available in the earlier editions as well, so don’t hesitate to sign up.

ANCESTRY.COM: How to use it ??

Members who visit the Q.F.H.S. Library now have access to over two billion new Genealogical Records. These include all the United States censuses 1790 - 1930; the fully indexed 1891 census for England and Wales; numerous indexes to the 1901 Canadian census; and thousands of other databases. The purpose of this seminar will be to examine the ways in which these records can be most effectively accessed and used.

An Introduction to the World of Computers

Once again the society will be offering a course for those who are not that familiar with their Windows computer. The course will cover the basics of using Windows (98SE, XP), word processors (Word and WordPerfect), routine maintenance, Internet security (anti-virus, firewall, spyware blockers, etc.).You will also have a chance to ask the question (about computers) that has been bothering you. To help tailor the course to the experience level of the participants, you will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire a few weeks before the course date. Registrations received after that date will be accepted but your input may NOT be included in the course. The questionnaire will be sent by email so be sure to include your email address in your registration.

FAMILY TREE MAKER COURSE - BASIC

Thanks to our new projector, it is now possible to give courses showing the actual computer screens rather than overheads. The Family Tree Maker course should be easy to follow since it will be possible to demonstrate how to use the software and what results are produced. We will be looking at many aspects of FTW, using the new Version 11.0. For a basic course, however, it is not important which version you are currently using, or planning to use. Bring your questions also, and as many as possible will be answered. PLEASE RESERVE EARLY - Maximum 17 people. We already have some who have reserved after November's basic course!

EFFECTIVE PHOTOGRAPHY FOR FAMILY HISTORIANS

This workshop will explore the ways of using photography to help in the use, preservation and dissemination of photographs, artworks, forms and other graphic material crucial to family history research. Topics covered will include the care and handling of archival material, duplication of archival material, use of photography to support field research, scanning and photographic copying and the great benefits offered family historians by the digital revolution, including selection and use of digital cameras, scanners and image editing software.

John Fowler is a commercial and stock photographer whose work is licensed for publication by a dozen distributors all around the world and through his own website at www.johnfowler.ca.

He is descended from Henri (Henry) Martin and some of the earliest settlers and community leaders of Compton County, in the Eastern Townships. Bonnie Fowler, John's wife and a highly skilled family historian who traces her Canadian ancestors to Louis Hebert and the earliest French citizens of Quebec, will also participate in the workshop.A question and answer period will be included. To aid in providing the most comprehensive workshop possible, QFHS members are invited to submit questions in advance of the workshop to john@johnfowler.ca

TAMING YOUR WORD PROCESSOR

Need tips to use Word or WordPerfect? Want to improve how you set up a business letter? Will include some functions common to most word processors, such as inserting text, moving single words or blocks of text, printing labels for your Christmas cards, inserting pictures, making your own stationery, printing special envelopes, etc, etc.

If there are specific tips or questions you would like addressed at the course, feel free to send me a note at computree@yahoo.com, and write WORD PROCESSING COURSE on the subject line. I'll try to include as many suggestions as possible in this course that will be given using the new projector, so you can see what happens, when it happens.

QFHS Open House

As part of the "Journees de la Culture" Festival the QFHS will be holding an Open House and Booksale the week-end of September 30th, October 1st and 2nd. Come in and learn what records are available in the QFHS library and where to find information about your Canadian, American, Irish, English and Welsh ancestors. EVERYONE is WELCOME so bring a friend. Anyone wishing to donate books may drop them off at the QFHS Library AFTER Labour Day.
