Overview

Our members are researching in diverse areas. Our collection of research material, in various mediums, reflects this diversity - Quebec, Ontario, United Empire Loyalists, the British Isles, France and the north-eastern United States.

We have:
- back issues of Connections, our own quarterly publications
- issues of other genealogical newsletters and journals,
- Monumental inscription lists from Quebec cemeteries,
- our Ancestral surname list,
- hundreds of thousands of records on Microfilm, microfiche (including the IGI), CDs, and of course, in hundreds of books and other reference material.
- books can be loaned to in-town and to out-of-town members

Book Loans to Members

We have over 5000 titles available for loan for up to three weeks, and another 900+ that are for use in the library, including the local United Empire Loyalist branch's collection. New acquisitions appear regularly in Connections.

Our magazines/serials of genealogical interest, with well over 200 titles and thousands of issues, are all available for loan. We have abstracts of many of our own Journal's articles, Connections, available.

Books in the CIRCULATING COLLECTION, but not the reference books, are available to all members (mail service is available). The loan period should normally allow you to use the book(s) for three weeks.

If you are an out of town borrower, the borrower must pay the cost of return postage. Members make requests directly to the QFHS. (Note on your envelope, "LIBRARY LOAN")

Microfilm

microfilm reel In addition to our own large microfilm collection , we can borrow microfilm from many institutions for our members, with no fee from either the National or Ontario Archives. You must pay the rental fee and return postage on American Lending Library film titles. Most Canadian sources, allow up to 30 days retention/use.

All FILMS MUST BE USED AT OUR LIBRARY. Prints from microfilm are $0.25 per page.

Directory of Monumental Inscription Lists
Tombstone This is a directory of the names of about 1100 cemeteries, in or near the Province of Quebec, and elsewhere. The directory is available for purchase from our Bookstore.

file cabAbout 400 of the cemetery lists are available for copy and purchase at varying costs, depending on their size. Their prices are listed in the Directory of Monumental Inscriptions.

Several other cemetery's lists have been reproduced, and are available from our Bookstore.

The inscriptions lists in our library can also be searched for a specific surname, in a particular cemetery for $5.00. Note on your envelope, "CEMETERY GRAVE LISTS".

Ancestral Surname List The society has an ANCESTRAL SURNAME card file of names registered Card Indexby members. Listings of these are also available from the Store at a nominal cost.

In addition, our current Members' Interests will soon be available for your perusal on line.

Members are invited to submit lists of the surnames of their ancestors. Please use the standard form in Connections.

International Genealogical Index

The library has a microfiche copy of the INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL INDEX (I.G.I.) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). (This is in addition to thousands of fiche available on various subjects.) The IGI Microficheincludes Parish records and Vital Statistics from 90 countries. Access to the Index is limited to members. There is a fee of $0.25 per printed copy.

Now that so many records are available on the web, many researchers probably discount using the old-fashioned microfiche. As an example, the microfiche of the IGI for England and Wales, and for the 1881 UK census can be particularly useful to supplement those same records which are on the web. The 1881 Census has an all-UK name index in addition to the county records and it can be surprising to find a "Soundex" name on the microfiche which doesn't appear on the web. In addition there are other indexes such as "as enumerated" and street enumerations in a more compact form than web records. The IGI records also can point to alternative names or records for 300 years which you have not found on the web. QFHS has both of the above records. In addition, we have many specialized records on microfiche, such as Consular Records of BMD for British citizens, Army BMD registrations made abroad, and they can save a great deal of time compared to finding the right web site. The moral of the story is: If you meet a wall on the web, try our microfiche.

I.G.I. Extracts

Out-of-town members may use the I.G.I. Request Form in CONNECTIONS to request a search. There is a $5.00 fee for the search of a family name in any one Province, State or County. This includes up to five (5) pages of surname listings, handling and postage. If there are more than five pages, additional pages are $0.25 each.

Note on your envelope, "I.G.I. SEARCH".
