"Roadmap"

This section contains a preamble which contains:

Scope, of the contents;
Contact methods, if you spot a record of interest;
Record Layout description;

which is followed by Special Interests of some of our records, and finally our members' surnames listed alphabetically.

You can jump over the preamble if you wish, and go directly to the Special Interests and listings.

Scope

Our members' ancestors come from far and wide, and hence their areas of interest are also wide-ranging.

work in progress The information in this section comes from the QFHS Ancestral Surname card file. (Not all of this file has currently been converted for inclusion. Its coming in stages, so check back later.) In some cases you will see the families' migration to present times indicated. In others, perhaps only a name and a place.

In addition, our members with email capability have added some of their personal, non-ancestral special interests. A section is included outlining these interests.

Contact Methods

We hope you will find one of our members who is researching a surname that interests you. If you find that there is a GOOD match with your dates and locations, contact the person who submitted the surname. (DON'T contact our Webmaster- he can't help.)

There are three methods of contact:

CAUTION:- Members move, and don't always advise us of their changed address, while others just drop out. We'll do our best to make the contact, but recognize that contacts may not always be possible. Sorry.

Only members may list their interests. If you'd like to join us, here's where you'll find the information you need. Members may use either the form in Connections, or contact the email coordinator, to submit information for inclusion on this list.

Record Layout

Records can be no more than 80 characters long, and are composed of five parts:

  1. QFHS membership number. (5 characters.) If preceded by a plus (+), it is an addition with the latest update, new in other words. If an asterisk (*) is present, our address on file may be out of date, i.e. membership has not been renewed, or member has apparently moved.
  2. Surname of the family or individual, in upper case, except for Mc, Mac, de, Le, La, dit and similar. (Up to 13 characters for a non-cross- reference entry )
    In some cases you may have multiple spellings to contend with, and different approaches may be needed. Some examples;
    1. COX(E), with the alternate end spelling bracketed. If the alternate spelling is in the middle of the word, use the "- see....." approach as used in the example following.
    2. ABRAHAM- see COURVILLE (All that's included other than the member's identification tag.) Don't worry about length.
    3. FRANCOEUR (dit)- see LeCLERC. (All that's shown other than the identification tag.) The "dit" name is also shown in the LeCLERC entry details. (AUDET-dit-LAPOINTE means AUDET - also called, or also known as - LAPOINTE. Some descendants are known as Audet, others as Lapointe. In other cases, both names were kept.)
    4. LaFOND, de. Where the gender is separated, e.g. La FOND, shown as illustrated. If a "de" forms part of the entry, it will follow/trail as shown.
  3. The earliest date on which information is available on the family in the members' records, e.g. a birth, marriage, etc. (Up to 6 characters are allowed.)
    Sometimes you'll find shorthand added to a date:
    1. 18thc for the 18th century;
    2. 1820s for the decade; or
    3. the conventional b, m, d, c (circa) preceding a date; or
    4. "P" for preceding/before/earlier than,
    5. "L" for Late,
    6. "E" for Early,
    7. "?" for a questionable date,
    8. "+" meaning a time after the date shown/later than,
    9. "All", any time period.

  1. Latest date information is available on the family, individual, or line. It could be a death, "" date, or "NOW" if information to the present exists. (Up to 6 characters is allowed.)
  2. Details on the family/individual. For example, occupation, family source/location, immigration information, etc. An emigration could take the form , weaver, LIM, IRL 1822 » Carleton Co. » Lambton Co., ON, CAN. If space is tight, sometimes space between certain words may be dropped if the meaning is clear or punctuation is present.
    Standard Province/State/County and country abbreviations are used. (Up to 50 characters)
    With long lines, spaces following punctuation is removed, and words may be abbreviated.
