CONTENT:

Welcome to the strays page of the Quebec Family History Society web site. For several years we have been gathering information on Quebec strays through member contributions and have decided to make this available to the public in a searchable index. You will find the following fields: surname, first name, event, year of event and the province, state or country where the event occurred. There is also a reference number in the right hand margin.

PLACE YOUR ORDER:

If you find a person of interest and wish to have the complete information please copy all the data including the reference number and mail it to the mailing address at the top of the page. Write "STRAYS" on the face of the envelope.

The fee is $5.00 per name.

You will be provided with a copy of whatever information we have on file. The vast majority are death notices.

DEFINITION:

A Quebec stray is someone who was born and lived some of their life in Quebec, but reference is found to them in marriage registers, obituaries, newspaper reports, census records, photos, local histories or any other record from places outside of Quebec.

A simple example would be the person who was born in Quebec, lived most of his life here then moved away in retirement to eventually die outside of the province. Another example would be a Quebecer who leaves the province to get married.

We have broadened the definition somewhat to include some people who were not born in Quebec, however they were long time residents of the province who developed a strong relationship with Quebec and have been discovered in references from places outside of Quebec.

An example of this would be a person born in New Brunswick who spent 40 years teaching and perhaps was married in Montreal and then died in Ontario.

On the other hand, a person who was born elsewhere, and lived and died in Québec is not likely to be found here.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:

The QFHS thanks all the contributors of stray data be they individuals, genealogical societies, church organizations, local history groups or newspaper clippers. Hopefully you will discover within these pages the information that will lead you closer to your destination.

BOOK PUBLICATION:

The QFHS has published a softcover book of 1286 strays which it sells for $10.00. If the reference number starts with a "1" you will find the stray information in the book. If you find more than two names of interest it may be to your advantage to order this book (Item B3100). Look at the Publications page in this website for ordering details. Entries with a "2" as the first number of the reference number have yet to be published in book form.

MEMBER ADVANTAGES:

QFHS members may consult the card file in person, free of charge at the society's library. We can provide a photocopy of the referenced material for $5.00 an item. Please forward your request, with your cheque attached, to the mailing address at the top of the page.

PROVIDING STRAY'S INPUT:

If you wish to provide us with stray data for inclusion on this web page you are more than welcome. Please provide the full name of the person, the place of birth or residence, the type of event, (death, marriage etc) the date of the event, the place of the event, the reference for the data and your name. If you have supporting documentation such as an obituary, death notice or marriage, note the name of the paper and the publication date on the clipping and mail it to the QFHS.
